Ecological Damage & Health Issues:
In our oceans, polluting the water and harming sea life. Studies show that if immediate changes aren’t made, by 2050 plastics in the ocean will outweigh the fish. Or, in our landfills, adding tons of pollutants to our bio-system daily. In BOTH cases, plastic straws take literally 200 years to decompose. As they do, they add a continuously increasing and dangerous level of plasticizers and other pollutants to our water, land, food, and bodies. Plastic straws are one of the biggest contributors to pollution in our environment. They have been used for decades as an irreplaceable part of every soft drink, cocktail, kids drink packs, etc by the billions each year. *(source)
A Supply Problem & Health Danger
As above, 90% of the straws used in the US are plastic. That leaves a shortfall of over 18+ Billion paper straws in the U.S. supply right now. While European imports are offsetting some of that, the main alternative suppliers mostly, mostly from Asian countries, are not suitable for direct food contact, but we know that is the most important regulation that paper straws should require to be completely safe and allergen free.
That is a health concern.
Currently, under the FDA paper straws are not classified as “direct food contact” products but are classified as “packaging” . While U.S. and European suppliers hold their products to higher standards of ‘Food contact” paper straws manufactured in other source countries are not held to that same standard.
The majority of straws are imported from Asian countries and do not comply with environmental standards and for direct use in food. Meaning that importing from outside of the US and EU regulation jurisdiction is a hazard. In Europe there have been rising issues regarding paper straws sourced in Asia.
